Programs On-Line: American Red Cross Water Safety Program

Trains instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants' progress.

Prerequisites: Be at least 16 years of age on or before the last day of course.  Successfully complete the precourse session by demonstrating the following skills consistently with the Level 4 Stroke Performance Charts:  25 yards Front Crawl, 25 yards Back Crawl, 25 yards Breaststroke, 25 yards Elementary Backstroke, 25 yard Sidestroke, 15 yards Butterfly, Tread water for 1 minute, Float on back at surface for 1 minute.

Certification Requirements:  Successfully complete the online Orientation to the Swimming and Water Safety Program the day before class starts, including the orientation to the American Red Cross. Successfully complete the precourse water session.  Attend and successfully participate in all course lessons, including all online content.  Successfully complete all practice-teaching assignments. Score a minimum of 80 percent on the final written exam. Certificate issued and Validity Period.

Certification will be available to view and print within 10 days of course completion.  

Water Safety instructor Certification /Authorization is for 2 years.
